The Living Planet Index (LPI), provided by the Zoological Society of London (ZSL), encompasses nearly 35,000 population trends for 5,495 species, spanning from 1970 to 2020. As per the report, the decline has been most significant in freshwater ecosystems (85%), followed by terrestrial (69%) and marine (56%). Further, on a regional level, the steepest decline was reported in Latin America and the Caribbean, where populations have dropped by 95 per cent, followed by Africa, which has seen a 76 per cent decline. While Europe has seen relatively modest declines, Central Asia and North America have experienced more significant population decreases, with drops of 35% and 39%, respectively.
