30,000 tonnes of garbage burnt in open, city’s air quality suffers

Hyderabad: At present, Hyderabad reportedly sees 30,000 tonnes of open waste being burnt every year. Rough estimates show this is likely to touch 40,000 tonnes by 2030. While there is no official record to ascertain how much of it is recycled, experts say that although a large percentage of air pollution stems from over the 2,000 industries in the city and over 75 lakh vehicles that congest its streets, open waste burning is also a significant contributor. Especially since it leads to a sharp rise in particulate matter that can cause severe respiratory complications.
