Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation wants e-waste inventory in offices

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to write to the government and private offices to make an inventory of the e-waste so as to dispose them in the on-going drive carried out by the BMC every Saturday.

The civic body has in four Saturdays collected 100 quintals of e-waste from households. The Swachh Sathis go door-to-door to receive the e-waste from residential areas. After collection of the waste, they are taken to the material recovery facility (MRF), set up near Sainik School. The authorised agencies empanelled by the state pollution control board will take up recycling of the waste.

“We are carrying out the drive every Saturday for household collection of e-waste. But offices have bulk of such waste. We will write to them to prepare an inventory, which can be shared with us so that we know the status of e-waste pile up in offices. Accordingly, we will plan collection and disposal,” said BMC deputy commissioner (sanitation) Suvendu Sahu.

In 2018, the BMC had launched e-waste-free Bhubaneswar programme. But now, based on the fresh guidelines issued by the housing and urban development department (H&UD), the e-waste collection and disposal have been taken up.

The smart city being home to several offices and institutions, it has always remained a challenge to dispose the bulk of such e-waste.
