Chief minister Pema Khandu, chairing the 7th e-Pragati meeting virtually in Itanagar on Tuesday, said Arunachal Pradesh, being a part of the Himalayas and with one of the largest forest covers in the country, has a big role to play in dealing with climate change and global warming.
“According to records, the state witnessed an increase annual mean temperature of 0.05 degrees Celsius per year and 0.59 degrees Celsius in the past 40 years. From 1980 to 2019, a significant decreasing trend in southwest monsoon rainfall and also in annual rainfall has been observed along with increase in the number of dry spells and decrease in rainy days,” the statement said.
These states, mostly in the eastern part of the country, require prioritisation of adaptation interventions, the report pointed out.
“Climate change issue is very much important for the northeast. Within the country, this region is one of the most vulnerable to climate change because of our very unique topography and physiographic location, due to our dense network of rivers and also for our location in such an area where the southwest monsoon dominates our lives, the agricultural economy to a big extent,” Partha J. Das, who heads the water, climate and hazard division of Guwahati-based green NGO Aaranyak.
In June, Assam had announced that it would create a separate climate change department to tackle various threats posed by global warming, to adapt to and mitigate the phenomenon.
