‘Vulnerable’ Arunachal Pradesh draws up roadmap to tackle climate change

GUWAHATI: Arunachal Pradesh, a “highly vulnerable” state to climate change, has come up with the “Climate Change Management Mission 2047”, a roadmap for the state to contribute to the global efforts to minimise and mitigate the crisis.
The plan aims to attain climate regulation, increase carbon sinks and reduce CO2 emissions, increase green cover, restore the eco-system and improve livelihood and opportunities.

Chief minister Pema Khandu, chairing the 7th e-Pragati meeting virtually in Itanagar on Tuesday, said Arunachal Pradesh, being a part of the Himalayas and with one of the largest forest covers in the country, has a big role to play in dealing with climate change and global warming.

“Prepared and presented by the state department of environment and forests, the mission has set goals for water conservation, habitat, agriculture, forest sector, disaster management, energy and the transport sector, waste management and health sector to be achieved in the next two decades,” a statement from the chief minister’s office (CMO) said.

The chief minister informed that the next cabinet meeting, scheduled for Thursday, will exclusively discuss climate change and directed the department to submit the detailed Climate Change Management Mission- 2047 document for the same.

“According to records, the state witnessed an increase annual mean temperature of 0.05 degrees Celsius per year and 0.59 degrees Celsius in the past 40 years. From 1980 to 2019, a significant decreasing trend in southwest monsoon rainfall and also in annual rainfall has been observed along with increase in the number of dry spells and decrease in rainy days,” the statement said.

Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are among the eight Indian states which are highly vulnerable to climate change, according to the latest national climate vulnerability assessment report.

These states, mostly in the eastern part of the country, require prioritisation of adaptation interventions, the report pointed out.

“Climate change issue is very much important for the northeast. Within the country, this region is one of the most vulnerable to climate change because of our very unique topography and physiographic location, due to our dense network of rivers and also for our location in such an area where the southwest monsoon dominates our lives, the agricultural economy to a big extent,” Partha J. Das, who heads the water, climate and hazard division of Guwahati-based green NGO Aaranyak.

In June, Assam had announced that it would create a separate climate change department to tackle various threats posed by global warming, to adapt to and mitigate the phenomenon.
